Hey Ziggy, I have a Malt Mill, that doesnt have an adjustable gap setting.I used to double, or sometimes even a triple crush, believing it to give me better extract efficiency. However, once I got my process down and repeatable, I have gone back to a single pass through the mill and still get 80 -
Apr 05, 2008 The Barley Crusher is a dual roller malt mill, and the gap can be adjusted by turning a knob on the unit. Mar 30, 2018 Our RMS 4 roller mill for preground malt has recommended starting gaps set to 4 thousandths of an inch .102mm, and 3 thousandths of an inch .076mm. From those starting points we adjust the mill to achieve the desired particle size. While the mill gap is the adjustment made, it is more important to measure the resulting grist.

Apr 02, 2015 Learning what a good crush looks like and aiming for that every time is more important than the gap measurement. Even after you arrive at a setting that generally works well, you may find that you have to adjust the gap or do a double crush sometimes. Setting the crush too fine often leads to stuck sparges. This type of grain mill can produce a good crush without too much husk damage if the spacing is set properly .035-.042 inch. It is the least expensive kind of grain mill, usually selling at about 50.00. The other type of grain mill crushes the malt between two rollers like a clothes ...

Dont use a coffee grinder to crush your grains. Even on the coarsest setting youll still over-pulverize your grains and end up with tannin problems. I have put malt in a 1 gallon ziplock bag and crushed it with a rolling pin. I have done up to 5 pounds that way in the past. It was tough but it worked.

Nov 23, 2015 I milled both sets of grain consecutively, starting with the coarse grist, running it through my 2-roller mill with a gap setting of 0.039 inches 1 mm, which cracks the hull and exposes the starch without completely demolishing the grain. This is a common default setting for
Mar 28, 2009 Best Grind Setting for Grains Saturday, March 28th, 2009. It pays to listen to your grist, it can tell you a lot about your brew day before you ever mash in, if you look and listen to what it is telling you. Jun 30, 2019 I have a Barley Crusher mill and I like it just fine. I bought it because I was getting an inconsistent coarse crush from my LHBS. I brew BIAB so a finer crush was important to me and consistency was even more important to reliably reproduce the same beer. My gap is at .024 but once again I BIAB so the concept of a stuck sparge is foreign to me.
Aug 26, 2020 Im pretty frugal so I like the Barley Crusher MaltMill and I use a 38 drill I bought at Harbor Freight to power the mill. I generally keep my gap at 0.032-0.036 or 0.8636mm-0.9144mm but depending on the type of grain Im using, I may have to make slight adjustments real-time.

Feb 25, 2016 BIABers should be able to mill fairly finely tightening the gap till somewhere in the 80 mash efficiency range or higher. Most cooler mash and batch sparge folk may need a middle ground, not all flour, but a good fine crush. Malt conditioning may really help here tightening up the gap while leaving more intact husks.
I set my gap at 1.7mm and get efficiency in the range of 90-92. Im also doing step mashes and single decoctions with German malt Weyermann which is pretty plump. If you are using domestic grain especially 6-row then you will need a tighter gap. When I go to 1.5mm or 1.6mm my efficiency does not improve, but I do have runoff problems.
